The origin of the Shakti Peethas is rooted in the ancient mythological tale of Sati, the daughter of King Daksha and the first consort of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu scriptures, Daksha disapproved of his daughter’s marriage to Shiva, whom he considered a wild ascetic. To humiliate Shiva, Daksha organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ceremony) but did not invite Shiva or Sati.

Despite not being invited, Sati went to the yajna, hoping to convince her father to accept Shiva. However, Daksha insulted her and Shiva in front of the assembled guests. Overwhelmed with grief and rage, Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.

When Shiva learned of Sati's death, he was devastated. In his sorrow and fury, he carried her lifeless body across the universe, performing the Tandava, the dance of cosmic destruction. To save the world from Shiva’s rage, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati’s body. Her body parts fell in different places across the Indian subcontinent, and each site where a part fell became a sacred Shakti Peetha.

Shakti Peethas are not just temples or pilgrimage sites; they are power centers of divine feminine energy (Shakti), where the Goddess is worshipped in her various forms. Each Peetha is associated with a specific body part, ornament, or item of Sati. Alongside the Goddess, her consort Shiva is also worshipped, often in the form of Bhairava, the fierce manifestation of Shiva.
