Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) broke their infamous 18-year title drought on 3 June 2025, defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Emotions ran high across Karnataka, culminating in a citywide celebration, full of optimism, energy, and anticipation.

But joy turned into disaster. On 4 June 2025, during fan celebrations at Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, a catastrophic crowd crush claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people. This calamity overshadowed RCB’s beautiful triumph, turning euphoria into sorrow in mere moments.

By around 2 PM IST, throngs of supporters converged outside the stadium, many without tickets, hoping for a glimpse. The official felicitation at 5 PM, still nestled deep within the stadium complex, drew more people than security could handle

Around 3:30 PM, after gates had been closed to manage capacity, fans continuously pressed around a temporary drain slab, designed to channel water, but laid over a weak foundation. Under the sheer weight and pressure, it gave way, triggering panic. Overcrowded narrowing passages funneled terrified fans into a lethal crush

The stadium gates remained shut as parking lot barricades buckled and fences gave way. Police intervened with lathi-charges and attempts to disperse crowds, but the sheer numbers overwhelmed them . As casualties piled up, a few dozen ambulances rushed in. Hospitals like Bowring, Vydehi, and Vaidehi received a deluge of the injured

Early numbers reported seven fatalities and over 25 injured. By evening, the count climbed to at least 11 dead and 33–50 injured . Authorities suspended key police personnel, including police commissioner B. Dayananda. In response, the stadium ceremony was truncated, and the planned open-top parade was officially cancelled .

Estimates placed 200,000–300,000 people outside the stadium, far exceeding safety thresholds. The stadium’s capacity, capped at roughly 35,000, could not absorb the overflow .

Reports suggest the late approval of the event prevented adequate deployment of police and emergency teams. Coordination lags among the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB, private managers (DNA Entertainment), and civic authorities created gaps.

The event was organized by a mix of government agencies, RCB, KSCA, and a private contractor, without clarity on responsibilities . RCB issued unclear advisories, later stating that the open-top bus plan was scrapped, yet fans were unaware.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah expressed grief, announced compensation of ₹10 lakh per victim, and ordered probe and suspensions. Many blamed RCB and Karnataka police for poor planning. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra echoed that criticism.

FIRs were registered against RCB, KSCA, DNA Entertainment, and stadium officials for “criminal negligence”. The arrest of Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s marketing head, occurred at Bengaluru airport on June 6 .
